History Of The Raceway

Infineon Raceway is a popular road course located in the heart of the Wine Country of Sonoma California.

Created in 1968, the raceway offers more than two miles of road racing with twelve different turns. This road course is particularly popular thanks to its scenery. It is set in the hills in the heart of the California Wine Country.

It all began with two men, Jim Coleman and Robert Marshall in 1968. They built the racetrack on 720 acres of land.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held in August and on December first of that same year the SCCA Enduro event was held.

The following year, the owners sold the racetrack to a Los Angeles company known as Filmways Corporation. This paved the road for drag, SCCA, IndyCar, and NASCAR races at the track.

Since its beginning, Infineon has gone through numerous changes in ownership and management. It has seen a great deal of growth to where it now hosts a racing school, a larger grandstand and so much more.

Some notable memorable moments include:

•1989 – The first NASCAR race was held at Infineon Raceway – Ricky Rudd takes the checkered flag.

•1996 – Russell Racing opens its doors at the raceway

•June 23, 2002 – NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd make history as the fastest race winner averaging 81.007 miles per hour.

Today, the raceway hosts NASCAR, NHRA Drag racing, AFM and AMA motorcycle racing, as well as SCCA and IMSA events. There is always something happening at one of the countries busiest raceways.

Track Details

The Infineon Raceway hosts more events than many other tracks in the United States. Out of 52 weekends in each year, 50 of those weekends are booked solid at Infineon.

There are roughly 340 days filled with events that bring more than one and a half million people into its gates. Here is some information about the race track:

• Track Size – 2.52 miles (NASCAR course: 1.99 miles)

• Course Type – Road Course

• Number of Turns – 12 (NASCAR course 11 turns)

• Top Qualifying Record – Jeff Gordon in 2004 94.303 miles per hour

Infineon is one of only two road courses on the NASCAR Cup Circuit. The other road course is Watkins Glen International.

Who holds the top 10 finishes record in NASCAR at the raceway?

Mark Martin holds the record for thirteen top ten finishes.

Who had his one and only NASCAR road course victory at this raceway?

The late Dale Earnhardt Sr., known as the Intimidator, won his only road course victory of his career right here at Infineon Raceway in 1995.

Race Day

The only way to stay at the raceway is to camp out. There are many campgrounds available near and in the raceway.

For those with RV's why not stay in the Trackside RV Terrace for prime sitting in the third and fourth turns of the course.

Other options include 50 Acres Campground, which is located behind turn seven, Carousel Campground, which is located near turn six, the Turn 8 Campground, which is in between turns seven and eight, and the Cougar Mountain Campground to the west of the track.

It is important to recognize and remember the rules and regulations of the facility. You are allowed to bring backpacks, bags, plastic bottles, coolers, stadium seats, and seat cushions.

However, under no circumstances can you bring umbrellas, lawn chairs, alcohol, glass containers, glass bottles, or cans, as well as weapons.

For a day at the races, regardless of which type of racing appeals to you most, visit sunny Sonoma California and the Infineon Raceway to "start your engines".
